View the latest post Carver 356 Rear Wiring Locations

Hello All,

I am in the planning stages of adding some additional electrical accessories to the rear deck of my 2001 356. Does anyone know how the wiring is run from the factory to give power to the rear stern light and the rear deck lights in the hard roof? Has anyone else done something like this and found the best way to get wires in the rear rail fiberglass or hard roof? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

View the latest post Battery sizing help

Hello,
Need assistance with correctly sizing batteries for 456 carver motor yacht.
Presently have 2- 8d batteries, 1 for each engine with all house running from starboard battery.
450 Cummins diesels. This a 50 amp boat. There is an additional small battery dedicated to the generator.

Does anyone have similar set up for 50 amp boat with diesels and what batteries have been successful.

Appreciate any guidance.

Thanks

View the latest post Walter V driver Gear Ratio question

On my 3327 Convertible it is now powered with a pair of Perkins T6.354 engines. I suspect it was originally powered with a pair of Crusader 270’s. The transmission is a Borg Warner Velvet drive and the V drives are Walter RV-26’s with a 2.05:1 gear ratio. I suspect this gear ratio was correct for the Crusaders with lower torque and higher RPM’s but something closer to 1:1 gear ratio would be better for the Perkins since they have higher torque and lower RPM’s. Since I’m looking at replacing the V drives soon due to corrosion in the water jackets I thought this would be the ideal time to change the gearing if appropriate. Does anyone know if a 1:1 ratio v drive would be more appropriate for my setup or should I stick with the 2.05:1 ratio instead?

View the latest post Fender Storage in Anchor Locker?

Hello All… since purchasing our boat 5 years ago, we have stored 4 fenders on the front of the boat. Two on each side in racks that were on the boat at the time of purchase. Since then, both racks have broken multiple times due to fenders expanding in the heat and general wear and tear. I have learned over the years that we really only need 2 fenders. I am not thinking of storing the two fenders in the chain locker. Does anyone else store their fenders in the chain locker? Any thoughts as to why this may be a bad idea? Rapid deployment of the anchor should not be an issue as I or crew would have to go forward to release the anchor safty latch and safty line so an extra. 10 seconds or less to pull the fenders out should not be an issue. Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions!

View the latest post Cored hull?

I was just gifted a new Ray CHIRP module side scan CP200 that wil work with my e series displays, Light House 2 software. I have an air ar thru hull transduer A A66091. I am looking for a zCHIRP transducer, preferably a shoot thru hull type. All the ones I have seen are for cored hulls. I believe my 1994 390CPMY is a solid glass hull? I know the stringers are hollow composite. Any ideas?

Has anyone used the transom mount transducers? Not a lot of room there where it could be mounted with not interference from teh wash/wake?

Thanks!

View the latest post Attachment(s) Cabin Downlights

[image][image][image]Im sure Ive seen a post about the Halogen Downlights but I dug deep and found some information that I thought might benefit all the members.
Replacement downlights. I found a supplier of almost like for like downlights. THese are the closest I have found to the OEM form factor. I ordered Lights from several Suppliers and compared them. The puck lights from aqlightinggroup.com look identical to Carver OEM with only one difference. They have a couple types and package deals, but I bought this one... model “IUC-CPH-WHT”. See the pics.
Pluses;
They are the same diameter.
They are halogen.
They use the same G4 bulbs as the OEM lighting.
They will surface mount to the ceiling with no modifications. (At least they did in my boat)
Price is 16 dollars each.
Minuses;
They are about a quarter inch taller than the OEM lights.

Aqlighting offers a LED version, but they are a little too pricey and the LEDS appear to be permanently installed in the fixture. I prefer to be able to change bulbs myself. I wanted to get away from Halogen anyway, so I ordered G4 LED replacement bulbs from amazon. These….. “ 6-Pack Dimmable 3-Watt T4 G4 disc LED Bulb 12V-24V AC/DC, 24SMD2835 LED”
They should fit right into the existing OEM fixtures and the AQlighting fixtures.(The little capacitor on the back may make them crooked in the fixture. I have my eye on another non dimmable LED that will sit flat. )Cool feature is that these LEDS are dimmable! Haven’t found the right 12v dimmer switch yet, but when I do, I'll share that too…

The yellowish bezel is Carver Original. The white one is AQlighting.

View the latest post 406 Navionics Upgrade Project

My goals for this project were as follows:
• Gain an anchor drag alarm.
• Get auto guidance so if in an Emergency anyone could drive us back to port or any location
• Screen can negate the Polarized lenses on my Maui Jim and Ray ban sunglasses.
• Get specific / Exact GPS Coordinates
• Catalog places I have been and be able to share them easily
• Rear facing camera
• Large enough screen to be seen from Captains chair

All goals were achieved on this project. While I do not need navigation for my way around the 38k square acre lake, I will admit the auto guidance system track allows me to not pay as much attention to the actual current location as it guides me to any destination with my custom preferences and parameters. Of course, I have to navigate the boat as I do not have an auto guidance capability aboard.

CONS: I will likely replace the GC100 Camera and move it to the engine room one day when I buy a wired camera to replace it. The Wi-Fi on this camera is not awesome (being nice) While the total distance from the chart plotter to the camera is less than 25feet it often locks up rendering it useless at docking until it comes back, It could be <1 second or a minute. Sadly, no adjustment I can find to fix this. The cutting out happens near the dock and in the middle of nowhere where no other Wi-Fi signals are present.

For lake insight only: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Lanier

I removed RayMarine A60, DSM25, Chart plotter, M66 Transducer (Reused) and I sold the A60, DSM25 and chart plotter on Ebay in one night, guess I left money on the table.

I added and used the following:
GA0209203 Garmin GPSMAP 8612xsv Chartplotter Sounder (Love this Plotter)
GAX11613 Garmin Wire Block to 8-Pin Sounder Connector
GA0186530 Garmin GC 100 WiFi Marine Camera
GA0231610 Garmin GPS 24xd NMEA2000 Multi-Band Antenna Vessel Already had a new Garmin Transducer GT54UHD-TM
Airmar M66 transducer (Re-used existing for 50/200 Mhz)

I was able to re-use the Airmar M66 transducer for 50/200 mhz and coupled with the Garmin GTN54UHD-TM for Clearview Chirp 840 kHz and side view to monitor depth/speed and temperature. This gives me an under the vessel view from the stern to midship.

See pictures of everything used/sold/installed.

View the latest post Bomar Portlight

Hello Carver community! I recently bought a 2005 Carver 396 MY and am searching for a new Bomar Port Light for the AFT Stateroom on the Port side. I cannot seem to locate the exact part # from the owner's manual and only have measurements. It is elliptical in shape and has true measurement on the outside of 18.8" H x approx 19" wide. I'm trying to find one online from a trusted source without having to pay $500 from West Marine. Any thoughts? Thank you!

View the latest post Attachment(s) Shake down completed

FINALLY got out for the shakedown run before the trip upcoming.starboard engine ran a little warm, and after 10 or so minutes (180-185) temp dropped, so did coolant. That darn air bubble from riser replacement finally worked itself out. was able to get to 4100 WOT (my number is 4000 to 4400) and we run HEAVY, full tankage, enough supplies to last as Admiral likes to have everything aboard. Finally settled down to cruising at 3000 at 165 temp. LIKE glass, so it was an Admiral day. Made some pasta sauce, pastrami, burgers, subs during past couple weeks as we live aboard mostly in the summer.
