View the latest post Attachment(s) Onan generator runs with no fuel pump?!?

I’ve had intermittent issues with our Onan 10KW generator model MDKWB (diesel) tripping the DC control circuit breaker (the 10amp red breaker) shortly after startup. Finally dug into it last weekend and this is what I discovered.

I traced it to a high current draw on startup and by process of elimination narrowed it down to the electric fuel pump. And during that process, after disconnecting the electrical leads to the fuel pump, I started the generator to monitor the current draw. I expected it to run briefly then shut off since the fuel pump was disconnected. Unexpectedly the generator ran great - and continued to run fine for 3+ hours. And I've probably added close to 10 more hours over the rest of the weeknd and today. All without the fuel pump connected electrically.

The only thing I can figure is that the fuel level in the tank is higher than the generator injectors and must have enough elevation head to ovecome all the flow restrictions, including a Racor filter and the non-working fuel pump. Does this sound right?

My real question is this: will running our generator without a working fuel pump cause any unforseen problems (short or long term) with the generator? I plan to replace the fuel pump when we get back to a marina but wanted to make sure I am not doing any damage like it is.

Thanks for any info!

Kyle

View the latest post Mounting the compressor to the pan

I have a 16k marine air that I believe someone has replaced the compressor on. The pan that the compressor sits on has 3 studs to secure the compressor. This compressor is only attached to 1 of the 3 studs. Seems the replacement compressor had a different footprint and someone didn't address this. The rubber isolators on the compressor seem to be in good condition. I need to try and secure it, it's really loud!
My idea is to fill the isolators with silicone and then run a self tapping screw with a washer down through the isolators.
Anyone have a different idea?

View the latest post Attachment(s) Spark plug wires not matching up to diagram

So attached is the original manual firing order and dist cap wiring diagram. I decided to finally number my wires and they are nowhere near what the manual says. Not having any issues but, when I do, this may cause a problem. I.E., the #1 wire is the 3rd cylinder from the rear of the engine on the starboard side if your facing the fly wheel. None of the other wires seem to match up to the diagram either. What would be the reason?

View the latest post 1984 crusader 350s - attach to NMEA 2000?

Hello fellow Enthusiasts -
1984 Carver 3607 Aft Cabin with the original Crusader 350s. I would like to retrofit and install a NMEA 2000 backone.

My question is: Can I pull data off from the original motors and if yes, how do I do it? I already contacted Crusaders Marine directly - and they were of no help.

So, has anyone already done this and how did you do it?

Jeff

View the latest post -Replacing gauges ?

Hi all, we are so excited as we just recently purchased a 1987 Carver 4207. We've been going through many changes and so far seem to be handling things one at a time.
One thing that did come up is in regards to replacing the upper helm gauges. I know the sizes are standard and I did do a forum search here...
My question is, do I really need new sending units?
I'm looking at all new Faria gauges and just the basic ones (tach, temp, alt, fuel, oil pres...) and am hoping it's just a simple swap out...

Anyone have experience with this?
Thanks!

View the latest post Water under port engine and wall

After coming back to my boat after two months I discovered water under my port engine. This is the first time water has pooled under the engine, I have always had some water in the bilge. I started investigating and found wet carpet under the couch against the port wall. I removed the two panels on the wall - one for access and the other for 'extra battery' (and I am really glad there was not a battery there) - the board in the battery compartment was very wet. There is a round access cap toward the aft that I unscrewed, giving access to where the fuel vent is - that area was wet as well. Looking up, there was very wet foam sheets.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I am drying out the boards, trying to dry the foam, and still trying to find the source of the water. I am pretty sure it is rainwater - but again this is the first-time water has pooled under the engine.
