View the latest post Main salon battery switch access under steps

Ahoy,
I have a 1999 Carver 404 and am trying to wire in a new house bank. The problem is I need to get access to the battery switch under the steps and do not know how. If I remove the for screws that hold the panel in there is not enough slack to pull the panel up. On my old 355 there was access to the panel from the aft cabin area behind the tv. Don't know if the previous owner cut it or not but it was accessible. This 404 does not have that access and I do not see any screws.
Is there a trick to getting access to that area? Thanks in advance this site has always been AWESOME!

View the latest post Attachment(s) Water beneath cabinets in the Galley - Rain Intrusion?

Hello there. I am new to this forum since I just got my boat in November. Had it put up on block for winter storage in January. Visited it 2 days ago to check on it and found water seeping out under my galley cabinets. Water systems are all off and winterized.

Doesn't look like I can remove the cabinets without destroying them, but was able to pull up the bottom board under the sink which allowed me to dry up the water (there was at about a half gallon.) It rained today, so I went back to check and there was more water. The wet areas are behind the two steps leading down to the galley and under the cabinets.
The water had also seeped under the parqueted floor boards which appear to be relatively new. Hopefully they will dry out without too much damage.

Is this rain water intrusion? Were would it be coming from? Bilge is dry. I've heard that water can get under the deck ??? If so, how does that happen? Bridge is covered with full enclosure.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

View the latest post duckbill replacement, generator location and hose replacement

I was getting ready to post a question about duckbills until I saw Viper's list of questions. So here are my answers:
Yes, the pumps run. (2 heads).
Yes, pumps shut off.
Pumps run 30 to 40 seconds before shut off - could be a little less.
Hardly ever cycle on their own.
Yes, water will remain.
Yes, full evacuation.
Duckbills were replaced approximately 5 years ago.
Duckbills on Admiral's head are making a "weet weet weet" noise just before shutoff. So I figured it was time to replace. Then I figured might as well do both. Is it time?

I'm going to replace some of the hoses with hard plastic. Friend of mine told me I should wait till boat is in water so system can be thoroughly flushed. What does everyone think?

Question: Do anyone know where vacuum generator for forward head is located? Are generators located next to each other on starboard side of engine room near aft head holding tank? I have a waste & water schematic - if anybody wants one shoot me a PM with your email.

View the latest post Water filters

Do most people use a water filter and if so, do you use them for the dock water and/or filling the tank?

We generally use bottled water for any cooking or drinking but I am curious about an option to use the "boat water."

View the latest post Fresh water pump while disconnected from shore

I have a 1999 450 Pilothouse and have a water question. When we are at dock, we use the shore water which pressurizes all o four fixtures. With the cold weather we recently had, they shut down the water to save the pipes which meant we did not have water.

I guess I do not yet know how to turn on the pump to pull from the fresh water tank. The main panel was in the on position and I looked in the engine room for another switch but did not find one. I must be missing something, any thoughts as to where to turn on the pump?

Thank you

View the latest post Planning to cruise from Pensacola to Keys

Good morning all.

My wife and I are planning our inaugural cruise from Pensacola to Key West in May. Having never done this, does anyone have some tips and advice as to duration and places to overnight? Is (for planning purposes) 3 days enough time to get down there or is 4 or 5 more the standard?

We have heard that the typical first stop is Tarpon Springs for the first night and that is a good distance away. It appears that we would be spending a good deal of time cutting the corner which could be fun, but wanted to see if that was the best way.

Thanks all and please understand that I am still learning all that I do not know. There is a whole lot of that. :-D

View the latest post 396 Carver Gas or diesel

Looking at 03 and 04 396's and wondering if anyone can share performance spec's/opinion's for both Volvo 8.1's and Volvo TAMD 63P Volvo Diesels. Thinking at this size it's on the line of needing the diesels but... Any insight is greatly appreciated.

View the latest post Anyone done a recent Chart Plotter upgrade

Hello all,

Anyone done a recent chart plotter upgrade? if so, from what to what?

The Caption and I are considering upgrading our 2006 Carver 36MY Raymarine 120C chart plotter, but wonder what the most user friendly/cost effective choice would be? We have the "factory" Raymarine suite, 120C chart plotter, TRI data display, radome radar Raymarine, GPS.

Would a newer Raymarine chart plotter utilize our existing radome radar Raymarine, our would we have to upgrade that as well? The new Doppler model looks intriguing.

We would also like the idea of AIS displayed on the chart plotter, and potentially adding it to our boat? via chart plotter or VHF radio? pro's and con's

Would like to hear what the "frugal" users out there have done?

As always, appreciate the insightful feedback and opinions.

View the latest post Drain and change Dex-Cool Generator Coolant

Anyone drain and change their Dex-Cool Generator coolant? I have a Kohler 7.3E and the overflow tank coolant color looks more brown than orange.

Is there a drain plug or other trick to draining most of the coolant from the Generator, before topping it off with "fresh orange" Coolant.

As always, informative suggestions much appreciated.

Cliff
