View the latest post Winterizing the A/C system

I would like to find out how you folks are winterizing the A/C system.
I know that if I remove the cover of the raw water strainer to add antifreeze. I will lose the prime and the process becomes a real pain.
I have a friend at the dock who tells me that he has a raw water strainer cover that has a female hose fitting incorporated into the cast. He states that this allows him to flush the system first with fresh water and then introduce antifreeze, all without losing the prime.
Unfortunately I was not able to view this 'thingamajig' before he pulled his boat for the season.
I have never heard of this and the local marine supplier has not as well.
I am interested in how you guys are going about this task.

View the latest post 2006 Carver 36 MY purchase pending

My wife and I are in the initial purchase stages of a 2006 Carver 36 MY aft cabin in Seattle area.
There is only a 217hrs on the twin gas volvo 5.7Gxi engines. The boat has been moored in fresh water in lake union.
What are the most likely items to be concerned and critical on?
I've read the drip pans of the ac units have draining issues?
The items i initially noticed are the starboard side swim platform is extremely close to the water line. The port engine starboard side exhaust manifold has rust stain from riser gasket area.
Only one engine bay light is working.

We plan to have a full survey preformed including haul out and inspection. We would appreciate recommendations for local surveyor? Haul out yard?

There is no bow thruster, we plan on having one installed after purchase and would appreciate feedback and recommendations to brand/size/yard to perform work in lake union area.

We are considering moorage at Elliott bay marina, any additional issues we should be aware of doing this?

We appreciated the bayliner forum feedback of our previous boat, 2003 Bayliner 245 5.7bravo3, which we'll be selling it this purchase goes thru.

General windlass Q:

Took the motor off and pulled the front cover, it still seems jammed up. I can’t turn the gearbox with a manual hand crank, not even a little bit. How would so go about inspecting the gearbox and getting a look at what’s going on inside? There’s a spring clip, but I can’t see much else. Pics below:

View the latest post ignition click

I have a 1986 Carver Riviera with two Mercruiser 305 cid V8 engines. Starting them has become difficult, when I turn the ignition key there is just a clicking noise. Eventually they will start after repeated trying. At first it was just the port engine but now it is both and is getting worse. Hope someone can help!

View the latest post Shore Power Tripping GFCI breaker

I have moved my boat from the TrentPort Marina in Trenton to the Port Credit Yacht Club in Port Credit :-D and now have an issue with my shore power. :banghead:

The TrentPort Marina does not have GFCI breakers which I'm pretty sure is the issue. PCYC does. I have to 125V 50A shore power socket inlets to the boat one that has the house-side of the panel on it. The other side of the panel only has two Air Conditioning units and associated water pumps. Shore power is two 30A. This shouldn't be an issue because I can connect the Air side and the breaker for that shore power circuit does not trip, even with both AC units operating.

The house side, however, trips the breaker immediately. I have tried even without all the breakers off and no dice.

Spent yesterday with the multimeter and found DC bleeding into the AC side of the panel somehow between ground and neutral through the Fore Bilge Pump. With that off, I can finally power up the House side of the panel with the Battery Charger switched off and the salon outlets, but it only held for half hour or so before tripping again.

I looked for major issues with the wiring and can't see anything obviously incorrect.

:help:

Boat is a 1988 Carver Santego.
