I currently have three of these systems on my 1989 Californian (built by Carver). All are split systems. Has anyone replaced/ungraded these that would retain the split system setup or gone to the new self-contained concept? if so, is this a costly project? What units (in either case) were purchased?

Imo As far as a diy project self contained units would be a easy install if you have the room in the hvac compartment. With probably some electric , water lines needing to be rerouted. You can do away with the refrigerate lines that the split system has and maybe less chance of some leaks at joints on the run. Theres lots of options on manufacturer's and cheaper too.

system in the boat next door to me in my marina. The picture on the link is the owner. He is an expert and all he does is marine air conditioning. He has 17 years experiance doing exactly what you need. I watched him do the whole installation, not one wasted move. I am not advertising for him, just letting you know there are people out there that know their stuff.
His company has done 14,000 installations in 17 years. Hope this helps a little, it doesn't cost anything to talk.
