View the latest post Thoughts on painting teak wood on my Mariner
- Posted by: Seif911 » April 6th, 2014, 9:25 am
- Forum: General Repairs & Maintenance
Morn All',
Has anybody painted the exterior teak wood on their boats? I am considering it. Yes teak is pretty cool and looks great but it is one of the things that seem to make my boat look old and outdated. What we were considering was to pull the glass and tint it all. Then paint all of the exterior wood black. How does the paint hold up on teak wood? Any special treatments?
If you want to see any example if what I was considering (call me a copy cat, that's ok), do a search on the net for a boat called 'Flip Me Over'. This place did just what I am thinking about AND they changed the roof line on the back and added a sliding door. It looks super cool. I have also thought about that. I know where I can get a glass door, but no tracks, which makes that decision a little more difficult.
Anyhoo, I know you guys have taken on some big projects, what do you think?
Thanks,
Steve

View the latest post Teak windows, need to make 100% waterproof
- Posted by: Seif911 » April 6th, 2014, 9:19 am
- Forum: General Repairs & Maintenance
Morn' All,
Ok so the windows are glass
. The teak surrounding the windows...so with my 1977 Carver sandwiches these windows in teak wood and added weep holes for draining. It is not in horrible shape and only 2 areas that I will need to replace. I will be removing the inside boards, and then the glass. My question is... What next???I can do a light sanding job and then cetol. This will make it look pretty but, what should I use to sandwich the wood back together? Glue, PL400, silicone, lots of options, just not sure. Also, many years ago I used cetol on a swim platform and my next step...I just can't remember. I can't remember if that was it or if I added a urethane on top of that to make it a gloss finish.
The whole goal here it to fix the wood, make it look pretty and above all, it has the let the water follow the wood track out the weep holes and not follow the wood joints, through the cracks and back into the boat.
Any help or ideas are appreciated. This is a major problem that I have to fix!
Thanks,
Steve

View the latest post Multiple, separate problems, starting with smoke at 2500+RPM
- Posted by: Seif911 » April 6th, 2014, 9:11 am
- Forum: Gas Engines/Transmissions
Good Morning All. It has been a while. So I actually stored my Carver in my yard from last fall. I am trying to give it a quick, intensive make over and improve the performance before it hits the water in a month. I have quick a few problems I am trying to address.
1. Last year I had smoke or steam coming out of the exhaust at 2500+ RPM's. We had quick a few ideas out there, not sure which ones I hit. My local mechanic told me to change out my propellers on the water pumps, since they are well over 5 years old. I will be doing that this week. He thinks it was steam and not smoke. It always had a smell of exhaust but I guess if the water was low, maybe that would make sense. Any other ideas? It was both engines. I am also changing out the flappers and they stay open, kind of doubt this will help me but why not.
2. The port engine could not go higher than 3200 RPM's. The starboard could go to 3600+ with no issues, while the port would hold at 3200. I have brand new water separators/fuel filters. The mechanic thought I should check he electrical side starting with the timing. I can't do that until next month when we warm up. Any other thoughts? I am worried about the carbs being dirty since this boat sat for 5 years, and had lilt hours I the past 11 years.
3. The starters...when I turn the key, nothing happens, not even a click or try. I back off and the turn the key again, maybe 6-12 times and then it engages and works. It always makes me nervous. This is both engines. The mechanic seems to think it is the relays, so I am changing that out this week. Any other thoughts?
4. Walter V-Drive warning light goes off for the port side. I believe this is a low oil level warning. I have checked the oil multiple times and it is good, though it is kind of nasty looking...kind of like bad gas sitting in a old carb. Any thoughts? Should I change this oil out for good measure? How and what do I replace it with?
Any other thoughts about other things I should address while it is in my yard?
Thanks,
Steve

I have a 34 Santego sedan cruiser with a very large built on swimstep. The exhaust for the starboard motor rubs through the swimstep and out the lower side. I have this rattle that just bugs me coming from the swim step. Any ideas??

View the latest post 28' Mariner bad Resister on the ignition
- Posted by: jwrape » April 5th, 2014, 7:07 am
- Forum: General Repairs & Maintenance
I figured out why my engines would only start on the release of the key and not when the key was being turned. The resiter shown here on the rear of the motor is weak. This resister is in line with the power to the coil. So since it's weak it depleats the initial voltage on the coil and reduces the spark on the plugs while the start is spinning. If the resister works correctly it applies 12v to the coil during the entire starting cycle. Once I crossed it over the motor started right up and ran perfect. If I un-cross it, the motor will run with throttle but not idle. I need to find two new ones to make it right.
I search Ebay but didn't find them, Does anyone know where to get them? They say 2 ohm's. It is located on the back of the engine beside the breaker right where the top of the transmission connects to engine.
Please tell me you know what this is cause I need two of them. If not I will buy a regular 2 ohm resister and put it in line and see if that works.

View the latest post New to Carver - 1995 Carver 380 Santego
- Posted by: mcanarelli » April 4th, 2014, 7:27 pm
- Forum: General Boating Discussion
Hey All!
I'm about to purchase a 1995 Carver 380 Santego. Survey will be within the next week or two. I believe it has the original 454 Crusader engines. Manifolds and Risers about 6 years ago. Does anyone have any ideas how much longer I can get before I have to do a manifold/riser job? How about the life of the Crusaders? They're coming up on 20 years... I think that's about their life? Should I be expecting to repower soon? Last question... they are carbureted - my last 3 boats were all fuel injected - is this a concern?
Very excited to move up in size from a Sea Ray 270. Two guys at my last marina had these boats - theirs were 2002 and 2001 (both fuel injected 8.1 crusaders).
Thank you all!

Hi, I'm a lifetime sailor...now living on this floating condo of a boat in comparison to the cramped lifestyle of a sailboat. Getting used to the shock of fueling this beast, other then that, she's a fine vessel for cruises to Catalina Island off the southern Cal coast...I'm open to connecting with anyone that has questions and would like to get together with other owners in Marina Del Rey, too if possible to compare ideas...looking forward to actively participating and contributing to the forum.

View the latest post Has anyone felt that the 3207 side railing feels unsafe?
- Posted by: jwrape » April 3rd, 2014, 12:32 pm

Looking at our 3207 and walking down the side of it seems that it's missing a rail that the factory should have added, in my optinion.
I was thinking about adding a single rail here to have a little something to lean on when going down the gunnels.
What are your thoughts?

View the latest post Where can I find a New/Used NorCold Fridge Gasket?

I have a Carver/NorCold Refridgerator Freezer. The gasket is Hard as a rock and has been painted even before I painted it again. I want to replace it. Where do I find a new or nice used set?
I just repainted the inside white instead of NASTY yellow. You can see how nasty it was in the last two pics.

View the latest post WOW!!! Carburetors are NASTY (rebuilt last night)
- Posted by: jwrape » April 3rd, 2014, 6:54 am

All I can say is WOW! i have never seen such a nasty set of Carbs.
So from what I can tell the 3207 I bought Saturday was up for sale since at least 2/2013. The motors have a little over 300 hours on them since they were replaced with re manufactured Mercury 5.7L's. The motors look pretty new and are all nice and painted although they are a little dusty. I plan to wash the bildge down shortly anyways.
Anyways, you can see that the boat was put up for sale and then not touched since (assuming there was a divorce involved). I assume there was some moisture in the tanks and in the lines because the carbs have rust in them especially the Port side.
When i took off the last chance filters, Sand fell out. I assume it's Rust but it looks like dirt. I'm going to replace all the water/fuel separator filters and then cross my fingers that everything works properly.
If it continues to run funny after I put the rebuilt carbs on then, I will have to figure out what I need to do to get the water out. I hope it didn't do any damage to the tanks or lines. I am hoping the water/fuel separator filters will catch it all.
I had a similar issue with my other boat and the filters caught it all and it runs clean now.
Here are the pics of what I found as I rebuilt the two carbs
Here is the fuel line coming into the Port Carburator

Dirt/Rust that fell out of the Last Chance Filter

Once I got it apart I found a lot of evidence of water in the bowl. I ended up bead blasting it to get the rust out

Here is the Starboard Carb. It's not as bad. This motor ran but would not stay idling for more than 30 seconds without pumping the throttle. I found a lot of Caramelled gas in it that looks like blood.

Here is the last chance filter on the starboard side. This Carb was running if you can believe it. CRAZY full of rust

Here is the cleaned and rebuilt Port side Carb. I dated it for my own reference

Here is the Starboard side rebuilt

And both together ready for install.
I am expecting they should start right up and then need to be tuned but should be all good.

I am still worried about the fuel pump on the Port side cause I never got fuel up to that Carb, but I don't know if that was from the clogged line at the carb or a clogged line somewhere else or just a destroyed fuel pump from the rust.
Only troubleshooting will tell.
