Question on heat exchanger

Ok. The project for this spring was to replace all the hoses, and replace the heat exchanger on the starboard 2006 Crusader 6.0 engine. I was able to use my oil change pump to pull the antifreeze out as I took the hoses off and kept most of the antifreeze off the bilge. :beergood:

When I took the old heat exchanger off, though, I noticed that one of the rubber gaskets that seal the sides up had a hole torn in it. I didn’t have a leak prior to pulling. It made me a little curious. As long as the gasket seals the outer edge of the end piece, it shouldn’t be a problem for the gasket to have a hole, should it?

The heat exchanger looked in good shape, though the flow from that engine when I was winterizing in the fall seemed slow on that side. (I also replaced the raw water hoses, the oil cooler and transmission cooler earlier in the winter.)

I used the new gaskets that came with the new exchanger, and will throw away the old torn one. I am planning on having the old heat exchanger boiled out and pressure tested to ensure it is ok. If it is, I will probably keep it as a spare. The fall project will be to do the port engine. Once I have that done, I will check on here to see if anyone could use it after I have it pressure tested.
